Student mobility in adult education: implications for professional development (2010-2011)

Adult education is influenced by international developments in academic and non-academic competency development. Developments in the European education arena, which are aimed at higher transparency and more international mobility, provide the background. Research results and data concerning study mobility are still limited. Available studies provide results concerning the development of intercultural competencies, language skills, international networking as well as personal aspects of student mobility. There is less research on the question of the contribution of study mobility to academic subject-related competency development. This study is an explorative study that aims to gather preliminary results on the academic subject-related competency development of students in adult education.
This explorative study researches the adult educational interpretation patterns of students. The following question leads the study: How does student mobility of students in adult education influence their adult educational interpretation patterns?
The methodical approach is based on an interview study (telephone interviews) with students in adult education at two different points. The first interview takes place shortly before students arrive at their host university. The second interview is scheduled shortly before students return to their home university. The study plans to analyse students’ adult education interpretation patterns. Thereby the focus is on the influences of the mobility semester.
